Therapy for Anxiety, Emotional Overwhelm & Burnout

When was the last time your mind rested?

If that question is hard to answer, you’re not alone. Most people have to stop and think about it. This page may be for you if some of this sounds familiar:

You don’t need to wait until you can no longer cope to begin.

What is happening underneath

Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic.

Sometimes it sounds like this, late at night, when the house is finally quiet: Did I handle that right? Check it one more time. What if I forgot something? What if it falls apart and it’s on me?

So you plan, check, and replay, staying one step ahead of what might go wrong.

For a long time, this may have helped you. Being prepared, responsible, or in control may have made life feel safer. It wasn’t weakness, and it didn’t come from nowhere.

But when your mind and body stay on duty for too long, even quiet moments can feel uncomfortable. You may finally have time to rest and still be unable to settle.

THERAPY FOR ANXIETY

How anxiety can show up

Anxiety does not always appear as panic. It often presents as a mind that will not rest: planning, anticipating, staying productive, and remaining a step ahead. It may involve prioritizing others’ needs over your own or being unable to rest even when time allows. You might replay conversations, anticipate problems that have not occurred, feel guilt when slowing down, or experience persistent pressure. Outwardly, you appear capable and in control. Internally, your mind seldom finds relief.

THERAPY FOR EMOTIONAL OVERWHELM

Recognizing emotional overwhelm

Emotional overwhelm arises when demands, emotions, and input exceed your capacity to process them. Minor issues may feel significant. You might feel flooded one moment and numb the next, react sharply to loved ones, or withdraw. Overwhelm is not a personal failing; it indicates you have exceeded your limits for too long.

THERAPY FOR BURNOUT

How burnout develops

You may have managed these pressures quietly for years, staying prepared and strong while underlying stress persists. Over time, you might not notice the toll it takes or how seldom you allow yourself to pause. What once fostered a sense of control can eventually lead to exhaustion and disconnection. Burnout often results not from weakness, but from carrying too much for too long.

How therapy can help

Many people come wanting to stop overthinking, feel less overwhelmed, or finally relax without guilt. Those are good goals. They also tend to sit atop something deeper.

Why uncertainty feels so difficult. Why making a mistake feels dangerous. Why slowing down brings guilt. Why you keep carrying things when you’re already exhausted.

In session, we slow those moments down. We look at what happens just before your thoughts start to spiral, your body tightens, or you automatically say yes to one more thing. What felt at risk. What the anxiety was trying to prevent. What it has been costing you.

Sometimes we look at where these patterns began. Mostly, we stay with your life now, so the work can hold up in real situations.

This isn’t about never worrying, or becoming calm all the time. It’s about understanding what sits underneath the worry, so that fear and responsibility have less of the final say in how you respond.

What to expect

We start with a free 15-minute consultation. It’s short on purpose. You get a sense of me, I get a sense of what’s going on, and you decide from there.

You don’t need to know exactly what to say. A recent moment of overwhelm, a thought you can’t stop returning to, or simply being tired of how things are is enough.

Sessions are 50 or 80 minutes long and are held online, at a pace that feels manageable for you. You won’t be asked to share more than you feel ready to share.

All sessions are with me, Irina Carayannis, MACP, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying).

Frequently Asked Questions

Stress usually has a source you can point to, and it eases when the demand ends. Burnout builds slowly, when what’s being asked of you keeps outpacing your chance to recover. Rest stops working. Motivation goes. Things that used to matter start to feel like they don’t.

No. You don’t need a diagnosis, a referral, or a crisis to begin. If life has felt heavier than it used to for a while now, that’s reason enough.

Sessions are held by video through Jane, the secure platform I use for booking and records. You need a private space and an internet connection, nothing else. I work with adults across Ontario, in English and Russian.
